Reflexology

A gentle approach through the reflex zones

Reflexology uses precise pressure on specific zones of the feet to encourage deep relaxation, ease tension and support the body’s overall balance.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a manual wellness practice based on applying gentle, precise pressure to the feet. It rests on the idea that certain areas of the foot correspond to different parts of the body: by working these areas, known as reflex zones, the practitioner aims to promote relaxation throughout the whole body.

In practice, you remain dressed and comfortably settled; only the feet are uncovered. The practitioner uses their hands, mainly the thumbs, to work across the sole, the top and the sides of the foot with a steady rhythm. There are no needles, no devices and no forceful manipulation.

Reflexology does not replace medical care and does not provide any diagnosis. It is above all a time for relaxation: at Skalli Therapy, every session is tailored to the person, their needs and how they feel.

What can it help with?

People turn to reflexology for a range of wellness goals, including:

01

Relaxation & unwinding

  • Stress and tension
  • A need to relax
  • Difficulty letting go of everyday tension
02

Comfort & balance

  • A feeling of fatigue
  • A feeling of heaviness or discomfort
  • Looking for better overall balance
03

General wellbeing

  • A need to take a moment for yourself
  • Looking for a feeling of lightness and relaxation
  • Support for an overall wellness approach

As everyone is different, sensations and needs can vary from one session to the next.

Where does reflexology come from?

Working the feet as a way to relax is a very ancient practice. Traces of it can be found in ancient Egypt, as well as in the healing traditions of Asia, particularly in China and India, where manual stimulation of the feet has long supported the search for bodily balance.

Reflexology as it is practised today took shape in the early 20th century. It was during this period that the first "maps" of the foot were proposed, linking each zone to a region of the body: these are the same reference points that modern reflexology still uses.

It later spread to Europe, where it is now practised as a wellness and relaxation approach, alongside — and never in place of — medical care.

How does a session unfold?

The session begins with a conversation to better understand your needs and general condition.

The practitioner then works mainly on the feet, using pressure, movements and techniques suited to the different reflex zones. The intensity and pace are adjusted to your sensitivity so that the session remains comfortable.

In this way, reflexology offers a moment just for you, in a calm and attentive atmosphere.

What might you feel during and after the session?

During the session, the pressure applied to certain zones may feel more or less intense depending on their sensitivity. It should always remain comfortable and be adapted to each person.

Many people gradually feel a sense of relaxation and release over the course of the session.

After reflexology, you may feel especially relaxed or slightly tired. Reactions can, however, vary from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Reflexology shouldn’t be painful. Some zones may be more sensitive than others, but the pressure is always adjusted to your sensitivity to keep you comfortable.

A session lasts about 30 minutes.

Reflexology can be offered to children from age 5. The intensity and length of the session are then adapted to their age and sensitivity.

There’s no set number of sessions that applies to everyone. It depends on your needs, your goals and how you respond. The pace can be worked out with your practitioner based on your situation.
