What Is Sujok ?

Sujok is a wellness practice that works solely on the hands and feet. Its name actually comes from Korean : "su" means hand, and "jok" means foot.

The underlying idea is simple : the hand and foot are seen as small representations of the whole body. The thumb corresponds to the head, the palm to the torso, the fingers to the limbs. Each part of the body therefore has a precise, corresponding zone on the hand or foot.

The practitioner locates the point corresponding to the area concerned, then stimulates it gently — with finger pressure or a small stylus, with seeds held in place with tape, or with small magnets. It's a very gentle approach, with no manipulation of the body, where you stay fully dressed and simply seated.

Sujok is a practice focused on relaxation and comfort. It does not replace medical advice or care, and it does not provide any diagnosis.

Where Does Sujok Come From ?

Sujok originated in South Korea, where it was formalised in the 1980s by Professor Park Jae-woo. It carries on the tradition of Asian approaches that look at the body as a whole and work through stimulation points.

What makes it distinctive is that it gathers all these reference points onto the body's extremities alone, making it a simple, quick practice that's easy to receive. It later spread to many countries, particularly in Europe, as a wellness approach.

What Can It Help With ?

Sujok is often sought out when an area of the body is too sensitive to be touched directly, or simply for a short moment of relaxation :

01

Tension & Discomfort

  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Painful areas that are hard to touch
  • Occasional feelings of stiffness
02

Calm & Recovery

  • Occasional stress
  • Light sleep
  • Fatigue and a need to recover
03

A Very Gentle Approach

  • Sensitive or tired individuals
  • Children and older adults
  • Short session, no undressing required

Since needs and sensations are unique to each person, the session is always tailored to the person receiving it.

What Happens During a Session ?

The session begins with a conversation about how you're feeling and what brings you in. You stay dressed and comfortably seated ; only the hands and feet are involved.

The practitioner then locates the corresponding points, which are often a little more sensitive than the rest, and stimulates them gently. The pressure is always adapted to your sensitivity and can be adjusted at any time.

Seeds or small magnets may be left in place on a point with a discreet piece of tape, to extend the effect of the session for a day or two.

A session usually lasts between 30 and 45 minutes : a short time, but entirely devoted to you.

What Can You Feel During and After the Session ?

During the session, stimulating certain points can feel a little sharp in the moment. This sensation is always brief and should remain bearable : don't hesitate to mention it, as the pressure is eased right away.

Many people fairly quickly feel a sensation of warmth, light tingling and release, sometimes extending into the area of the body concerned.

After the session, people often feel relaxed and lighter. A slight tiredness, or on the contrary a boost of energy, is also possible. Reactions vary from person to person, and sometimes from one session to the next.

A Single Session or Ongoing Support ?

Both are possible. For an occasional discomfort or simply a need for relaxation, a single session is often enough.

When it comes to a discomfort that has been present for a longer time, several closely spaced sessions, gradually spread further apart, are generally more suitable.

So there is no single number of sessions that works for everyone : it depends on your situation and how you feel. The pace is set together with you at the first appointment, then adjusted according to how you respond.
